Last night’s BBC programme on Hawking led me to a website where it was confirmed he still uses DECtalk, despite announcements to the contrary.

He was definitely a One.

So pleasing to see the photo of Martin. He lodged himself forever in my mind in 1986, when I read his warning to newbies such as myself on the DEC corporate VAXnotes (in-house discussion groups): “Regard everything you write here as stapled to your resume forever.” A very smart, funny man. I love the sign post story. While there is no deity ruling the universe, the universe itself might have a sense of humor and have purposely placed Martin in Bletchly Park at just that day.

DECtalk was his pride and joy and I was able to send him a spare one from my office before I left DEC. The voices were his pride and joy, but above all he loved the “drunken Swede” voice, for obvious reasons I think.

11 years gone. Bloody hell.

I used to work with Martin at Apple and we carpooled down from SF together on a regular basis. Martin used to have a habit of coming into meetings and dramatically announcing “I just fixed my last bug!” He also used to claim on a regular basis that he had managed to ship a bug free product – the DECTalk. I saw a mention that Stephen Hawking is still using a DECTalk and that led me to think of Martin and his bug free product and a little nostalgia and Google searching brought me here. I miss him too.
